Following comprehensive environmental soil testing at the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus this fall, Lynwood Unified has received official clearance to proceed with the next phase of reconstruction, marking a significant milestone in the District's efforts to restore the campus and provide a safe and modern learning environment for all future Knights.
“We know how much our parents, students, staff and community members have been eagerly anticipating the start of construction, as it promises not only to rebuild and improve the physical campus but also enrich the overall educational experience of our students,” Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D., said. “Excitement is building, and the future looks bright for our Knights.”
Soil testing was initiated in August after anomalies were detected near the construction site, possibly linked to former underground storage tanks outside the project area. A thorough evaluation by an independent environmental consultant confirmed that the site is clear and safe for construction, with no further action required, according to the official assessment report presented at the October 10 Board of Education meeting.
The District is set to open construction bids on October 15, with the contract award scheduled for the Board of Education meeting on October 24. In November, contractors will begin moving equipment onto the site and conduct preliminary work to prepare for deep soil mixing this spring.
A groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated shortly after the contract award, symbolizing the start of a new chapter for Lynwood High School.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to our community for its patience and support as we move forward with this major project,” Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Gretchen Janson, Ed.D., said. “This project represents our commitment to providing our students with the best facilities and resources possible in safe environments that support their education and future success.”
The campus will feature a 175,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art classroom building equipped with a culinary arts kitchen, state-of-the-art medical training labs and art facilities that promote hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, the campus will see improvements to existing buildings, including the administration and library facilities. Plans also include a new kiln, updated interior design and branding work. New softball and baseball fields will enhance athletic activities for students.
