Lynwood Unified Students Learn About Black History During Month-long Celebrations

Thurgood Marshall Elementary School students, teachers and families gathered on Feb. 27 for an exciting assembly celebrating Black History Month, joining schools across Lynwood Unified in paying tribute to African American history and culture.

Classes from each grade level put on a collection of musical performances and dances. Students also recited poems written by African American authors and performed short plays inspired by films.

The celebration was an opportunity for students and families to learn about the contributions of African Americans to society and the inspiring movements they ignited in the fight for equality across the country.

Lynwood Unified has provided many other opportunities for students to discover their potential and feel empowered to pursue their passions, including the annual Teen Summit held on Feb. 23.

Themed “Strength Behind Us, Greatness Ahead of Us,” students engaged in social-emotional learning workshops and heard from keynote speakers Tyson Amir and Eugene Hamilton.

The event was an uplifting celebration of black history and included a student workshop, vision board activities, complimentary breakfast and lunch, and swag bags.
