Lynwood Unified’s Facilities Optimization Committee Holds Final Meeting to Review School Site Recommendations

Over the past several months, Lynwood Unified has been reviewing how to best strengthen its schools for the future as enrollment trends continue to change across the community and the state. This process—known as Facilities Optimization—is guided by the District’s commitment to ensure every student learns in a safe, modern, and thriving environment that supports academic excellence and opportunity for all.

On October 28, the District’s Facilities Optimization Committee—composed of parents, teachers, staff, administrators, and community members—presented its initial recommendations to ensure Lynwood schools are being used effectively and sustainably to support student learning.

As part of these recommendations, the Committee has proposed:

  • Relocating Hosler Middle School students to the Bullis Campus once the new Lynwood High School Imperial Campus reopens in Fall 2027.

  • Possible consolidation of Lugo, Wilson, and Rosa Parks Elementary Schools beginning in Fall 2026 due to low enrollment and rising operating costs.

These are recommendations only—no final decisions have been made. The Board of Education will review the Committee’s full report in November, with a final decision expected in December.

Like many districts across Los Angeles County and California, Lynwood Unified has experienced declining enrollment over the past decade. The District’s schools were built for more than 16,000 students, but now serve closer to 10,000, meaning many campuses operate well below capacity. While this presents challenges, it also offers an opportunity to optimize campuses, allowing the District to invest more deeply in schools that can provide robust academic programs, modern facilities, and greater opportunities for collaboration, enrichment, inclusion, and fewer combination classes.

If any changes are approved, planning would begin in early 2026 to ensure a smooth and supportive transition for all students, families, and staff. This would include hosting community meetings to share updates and gather feedback, coordinating transportation plans to support families, working closely with staff and labor partners to manage assignments with transparency and care, and exploring community-driven plans for the potential future use of school sites.

The District acknowledges that these conversations are deeply personal and emotional. Lynwood Unified’s priority remains the success and well-being of every student. The District is planning responsibly and compassionately to ensure Lynwood schools remain strong, equitable, and future-ready.

Lynwood Unified will continue to keep families informed and involved throughout this process. Updates will be shared through ParentSquare and posted on the District’s website as the Facilities Optimization process continues.
