Lynwood High Biomedical Students Celebrate 10 Years of Hands-On Earthquake Emergency Training

Lynwood High School’s Biomedical Sciences students took their classroom learning to the field on October 16, treating simulated burn victims, injuries, and even broken bones as part of the Great ShakeOut national earthquake drill.

Under the leadership of teacher Deena Smith, the biomedical sciences program celebrated a decade of hands-on emergency preparedness, where students demonstrated teamwork, skill and composure under pressure.

Throughout the reenactment, freshmen explored the history of earthquakes, common injuries and basic first aid, while sophomores demonstrated bleeding control and triage techniques for multiple victims. Juniors responded to poison and gas leak emergencies and seniors performed advanced trauma care, including treatment for fractures, amputations and other severe injuries. Advancement Via Individual Determination students also manage crowd control as part of their community service hours.

This annual event reflects Lynwood Unified’s ongoing commitment to providing students with real-world, hands-on learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. By integrating practical skills, critical thinking and teamwork into their education, the District ensures students are not only academically prepared but also equipped with life-saving knowledge and experiences that empower them to make a difference in their communities.
